Sazae-san makes Digital Transition

Didn't we just do a news story on this anime?

It's back in the news again this month. Not for record breaking (unless you consider this a record as well), but for making the digital transition. That's right Sazae-san is no longer using physical cels for animation, and going to digital next month. According the Association of Japenese Animation Sazae-san was the only TV anime still using cels. Since its airing in 1962 the show has always been hand drawn cels.

I'm impressed. Over 2200 episodes drawn by hand! Granted not all the episodes were full length but that's still impressive nonetheless. Its kind of sad too. The last TV anime to use hand drawn cels, most of people's favorite anime has been hand drawn by cels. Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, and many others. I'm sure hand drawn cels will still be used, not on TV. I'm sure some movies will still have some hand drawn scenes but animation making a transition to a digital format. In our modern age we see this transition in everything. In some schools Handwriting is no longer taught, its been replaced by typing.

I just hope animation schools don't stop teaching the hand drawn process.
